My Advice to Obama On Subsidizing Newspapers

A friend of mine just sent out this link about President Obama and his concerns in regards to newspapers being left in the dust while blogs are ruling the news. The irony is that I am contributing to his concerns by bringing my opinions to you in the form of a blog about something that is potentially important news.

Obama feels that too many blogs are reporting news without the facts and therefor, everyone is just yelling at one another across the internet and no one is getting the real story. Okay, I guess I could see that in some cases. That said, there are lots of websites in which you can read newspapers online – including blogs run by serious journalists, professionals and oh yes… actual newscasts.

Quite frankly Mr. President, my advice to you is to stop worrying about what people post in their blogs. You stand for free speech… or have you forgotten? Instead of worrying your pretty little head over who says what, worry about the complete idiots who believe that utter shit instead of reading news from respectable sources.

I really liked the brief list of why a government bailout for the newspaper was a bad idea. Here’s that list if you’re too lazy to check out the link at the top.

  • It’s bad to reward outdated businesses based on outdated tech.
  • Newspapers delivery trucks don’t run on water.
  • Traditionally bloated monopolies, newspapers don’t know how to innovate.
  • Just because newspapers go away doesn’t mean sources will.
  • Newspapers employ just 0.2 percent of the nation’s labor force.
  • 66% of people get their news from TV.
  • Newspaper owners think Google is a parasite.
  • Ask people when they last bought a paper, much less subscribed.
  • A government subsidized “free press” isn’t a “free press” at all.
  • As newspapers go away, a shrinking supply of ad inventory will drive up ad prices, rewarding innovative new media.
